Football Falls To SUNY Maritime, 24-14, Friday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2015) – The USMMA football team dropped its final non-conference game of the season on Friday night to visiting SUNY Maritime College, 24-14, at Brooks Stadium. The defeat drops the Mariners to 1-1 on the season, while the Privateers improve to 2-1.

The Merchant Marine offense was held to 175 yards on the night, with 161 on the ground and 19 via the air. Senior quarterback Matt McDaniels (Malverne, N.Y.) led the team with 76 rushing yards, while Luke Tiefenthaler (Freehold, N.J.) was right behind with 50. McDaniels was also 3-for-7 in completions for 19 yards.

On defense, junior Josh Woodburn (Huntingtown, Md.) led all players with 16 tackles (seven solo and nine assisted). Junior Patrick Keyes (Parsippany, N.J.) was second on the squad with nine tackles. Senior Jacob Hill (Glen Burnie, Md.) and freshman Jesse Byorth (Billings, Mont.) both had tackles for losses (Hill's for two yards and Byorth's for one).

The Mariners were trailing 17-0 after the first half and got the first of their two scores early in the third quarter. McDaniels ended a nine-play, 56 yard drive with a one-yard TD run. Merchant Marine scored again in the fourth quarter on another one-yard run, this time by Tiefenthaler, to cap a nine-play, 67-yard drive. However, the Privateers would run the time out with the 24-14 lead to capture the victory.

SUNY Maritime compiled 314 yards of offense (229 rushing and 85 passing). The Privateers were led by junior Brett McKinney, who racked up 88 yards on the ground. Senior quarterback Zack Chilcott was 5-for-10 on completions for 60 yards and one passing TD. Maritime also had a passing TD from one of its running backs, Nick Fischetti, who connected with sophomore Matt Ward on a 25-yard score at the end of the third quarter.

The Mariners return to action next Saturday, Sept. 26, when they host nationally-ranked Hobart College in the Liberty League opener. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Brooks Stadium.
