Baseball Team Earns ABCA Academic Excellence Award For Fourth-Straight Season

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 23, 2019) – For the fourth-straight year, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team has been named an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award recipient. The Mariners were one of 312 total institutions among NCAA, NAIA, Junior Colleges and high schools in the USA that earned the prestigious award for the 2018-19 school year, including one of 83 NCAA Division III schools.

"On top of receiving this award for the fourth-straight year, we're one of just a few teams in the nation that has earned this award all four years it has existed," said USMMA head baseball coach Michael Notebaert. "Our coaching staff is elated that our players continue to perform well in the classroom, especially given the regimental, athletic and academic requirements our midshipmen have."

The ABCA's Team Academic Excellence Award honors high school and college programs coached by ABCA members that post a Grade Point Average over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year.

Criteria for the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award include:

  • Must be a high school or college team.
  • Head coach must be a current ABCA member.
  • Team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 on a 4.0 scale during the 2017-18 academic year. GPA may not be rounded up.
