RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. (April 15, 2018) – The USMMA baseball team got back in the win column on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Skyline opponent Yeshiva at Overpeck Park in New Jersey. The Mariners took the opener by the final of 22-0 in a mercy-shortened seven innings, before winning the second game, 20-4, to improve their record to 23-7 (10-4 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 3-14 (0-12 Skyline).
The 23 wins is a new program record for Merchant Marine, as the previous mark of 22 was set back in the 2009 season, Head Coach Michael Notebaert's first year at the helm of the Mariners.
In game one, the Mariners scored eight runs in the second inning, then six in the third, five in the fourth, two in the fifth and one last run in the seventh to reach their highest run-total of the season. Freshman Quinton Heck (Massillon, Ohio) earned the win after tossing five innings and allowing just two hits with six strikeouts, as he improves to 3-0 on the season. Classmate Timothy DeWitt (Montverde, Fla.) finished the game with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings with one K.
At the plate, senior designated hitter Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) led Merchant Marine going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Four other Mariners knocked in two runs apiece – junior Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) and freshmen Alex Mesaros (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Timmy Chase (Scituate, Mass.) and Vincenzo Alteri (Watertown, N.Y.), while junior Tyler Mowry (Peachtree City, Ga.) and senior Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) both had one RBI apiece.
Reinebold and senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) both scored three times, while Alteri, senior Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) and juniors Trevor Fox (Northport, N.Y.) and Zack Winzer (Muskegon, Mich.) all came across the plate twice. Mesaros also scored once for USMMA.
The Mariners stole 13 bases in the opener – Mowry and Alteri both had three SBs, while Barnes had two.
For Yeshiva, junior starter Aryeh Salovey suffered the loss after throwing into the second inning He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on just one hit in 1.0 innings pitched. Freshman Simon Schoen and sophomore Mordy Kirsch had the Maccabees' two hits.
The second game saw Merchant Marine grab a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, however Yeshiva responded with four of their own in the next half-inning to tie the score up. The Mariners went back ahead, 6-4, after hanging two more runs in the second and then added more late – five in the fifth, four in the sixth and five more in the seventh – to cruise to the victory.
Senior Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) got the start and was tacked for the four runs in the first inning. He hurled 2.0 innings and gave up four hits with one strikeout. Freshman Andrew Hunt (Severna Park, Md.) earned the victory after tossing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four. He moves to 3-0 on the season. Junior John Kelly Jr. (Apex, N.C.) finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh with two strikeouts.
At the dish, Fox, Lucy and freshman Colin Baker (Clyde Hill, Wash.) all knocked in a team-best two runs each, while six other Mariners all had one RBI apiece – Barnes, Mowry, Campbell, Mesaros, Alteri and freshman Jacob Kelly (Norfolk, Va.). Sithong scored three times, Baker, Mesaros, Chase, Fox and freshman Davis Holley (Hoover, Ala.) all crossed the plate twice and seven other Mariners scored once.
The Mariners stole 11 bases in the second game, as Barnes had three and Sithong and Mesaros had two each.
Sophomore David Hanelin went 2-for-3 for the Maccabees, knocking in one and scoring once. Classmate Sonny Braha also had an RBI and a run. On the mound, sophomore David Hanelin suffered the loss, hurling 2.0 innings and giving up six runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
