KINGS POINT, N.Y. (March 25, 2016) – The USMMA baseball team dropped its Landmark series-opener to Drew, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Lower Roosevelt Field. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 4-10 (1-3 Landmark), while the Rangers improve to 7-10 (1-3 Landmark).
Sophomore Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) led the way at the plate by going 3-for-4 and knocking in the two Mariner runs on a bloop-single to right in the eighth inning. Junior starter Nathan Slusarczyk (Woodbury, N.J.) suffered the loss after tossing five innings and giving up five runs (just two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. Senior Kyle Clausen (Southold, N.Y.) hurled four shutout innings in relief, allowing just four hits and striking out three Drew batters.
Four costly errors plagued Merchant Marine, as the Rangers scored three unearned runs in the affair, including their first run in the top of the second inning and then two more as they scored three times in the top of the fourth. The visitors added another run in the fifth to go ahead 5-0.
The Mariners finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth when Campbell's bloop-single scored freshman Jesse Reinebold (Grangers, Ind.) from third and junior Matthew Thomson (Memphis, Tenn.) from second. However, that was all USMMA could muster up, as Drew held on to take the opener of the three-game series.
For the Rangers, senior Dylan Baxter earned the victory on the mound to move to 3-0 on the season. He pitched 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. Junior Tommy Broyles finished the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one Mariner base runner. At the plate, Broyles was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, junior Jonathan Rodrigues went 1-for-4 with a two-RBI double in the fourth and freshman Jayson Mitch knocked in the other Drew run, also with a double in the fourth.
The two teams are back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 26, when they take part in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field. Live stats will be available for both games by following these links: Game 1 Live Stats and Game 2 Live Stats.
