STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 15, 2015) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA baseball team lost a non-conference game at the College of Staten Island by the final score of 11-5. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 11-13 overall, while the Dolphins improve to 14-9.
Three batters had two hits on in the game for Merchant Marine – freshman Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.), who went 2-for-4 with a walk, one RBI and a run scored, sophomore Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.), who was also 2-for-4 with a run scored, and senior Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, N.Y.), who was 2-for-4 and knocked in one run.
Freshman Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.) had two sacrifice flies on the night and also scored a run, while classmate Bryson Campbell (Cool, Calif.) knocked in the other run for the Mariners. Freshmen Steve Lucy (Leawood, Kan.) and Alex Gambino (Haddonfield, N.J.) both scored a run each.
On the mound, freshman Justus Martin (Eaton, Colo.) suffered his first loss of the season, allowing seven runs on nine hits in three innings of work.
For CSI, freshman Glenn Glennerster led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while sophomores Bobby Drake and Frank Sconzo both knocked in two runs apiece. Sophomore south paw Josh Bernstein earned the victory, tossing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts.
Up next, the Mariners will travel down to Washington, D.C. this weekend for an important Landmark Conference series with Catholic. The Mariners and Cardinals will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18, that begins at 1 p.m. and will close out the series on Sunday with a single game that starts at noon.
