SELINSGROVE, Pa. (March 29, 2015) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost both games of its Landmark Conference doubleheader at Susquehanna University on Sunday, dropping the opener, 4-0, before losing the second game, 3-1. The Mariners fall to an even 7-7 overall (5-4 Landmark) on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 9-7 (6-2 Landmark).

Merchant Marine had just two hits in the first game, off the bats of senior Jake Wood (Richmond, Va.) in the sixth and freshman Michael Barnes (Alexandria, Va.) in the seventh.

Both pitchers tossed complete games, with sophomore Patrick Morgan (Roxboro, N.C.) hurling six innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts. His counterpart for Susquehanna, senior Spencer Hotaling, pitched the Crusaders second two-hit complete game win of the series, as he went seven innings and struck out seven for the shutout victory.

In the second game, Susquehanna got on the board first in the bottom of the first with one run on a double followed by an RBI-single. The Mariners went in order in the first three innings of the game and the Crusaders tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third on a leadoff walk followed by a sacrifice bunt and then an RBI-single and then another RBI-single later in the inning.

The Mariners broke through with a run in the next half-inning when Barnes hit a two-out double to right-center and then scored on a costly fielding error by the Crusaders' shortstop in the next at bat.

Again, USMMA had just two hits in the game as Susquehanna's starter, sophomore A.J. Pinto, pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five. His classmate Liam Conboy earned the save, closing out the last two outs of the game with a strikeout and a lineout.

On the mound for Merchant Marine, junior Kyle Clausen (Southold, N.Y.) started and went three-plus innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out one. He was replaced by junior Brad Suciu (Zanesville, Ohio), who didn't allow a run or a hit in three innings of work after taking over in the top of the fourth.

The Mariners are back at it on Tuesday, March 31, with a home game against non-conference opponent Mount St. Vincent. First pitch is slated for 4:15 p.m. at Lower Roosevelt Field.
