SELINSGROVE, Pa. (March 28, 2015) – The USMMA baseball team lost to Susquehanna on the road on Saturday afternoon, 2-1, at the Crusaders' Harold Bollinger Field. The Mariners fall to 7-5 (5-2 Landmark) in defeat, while Susquehanna improves to 7-7 (4-2 Landmark).
The hosts got on the board first with a run in the bottom half of the opening inning. After a one-out single by Taylor Luckenbill, the sophomore stole second and came home on an RBI single by classmate Zach Leone.
The pitchers took over for the next few innings, as senior John Kret (Chappaqua, N.Y.) allowed just two hits over the next two innings and Crusaders' senior Casey Hood didn't allow a single hit over the first four innings of the game.
That changed with the first batter of the top of the fifth, however, as senior Cameron Stadele (Alpharetta, Ga.) knocked his third home run of the season over the left field fence to tie the game up at 1-1.
Kret allowed a two-out double in the bottom half of the fifth, but escaped the inning with a fly-out to center.
Both teams went down in order in the sixth inning and Hood struck out the first two batters in the seventh and forced a foul-out to first in to end the top of the seventh. The Crusaders pulled back ahead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI infield single by Luckenbill.
USMMA had a one-out baserunner in the top of the eighth when senior Joseph Policastro (Hauppauge, N.Y.) singled to center, but was unable to bring a run across after a fielder's choice and a caught stealing.
Kret pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth and the Mariners had their leadoff batter, senior Jake Wood (Richmond, Va.) reach base after he was hit by a pitch to start the ninth. Sophomore Francis Grzymkowski (Stafford, Va.) came in to pinch run for Wood and stole second after a strikeout. However, Hood forced back-to-back outs on a bunt foul-out and a groundout to finish off his complete game victory.
Kret hurled eight innings and allowed two runs on eight hits with no walks and a strikeout. He falls to 1-2 on the season. Hood went the distance, allowing one run on just two hits and 11 strikeouts to improve to 2-2.
The Mariners will be back in action tomorrow for their doubleheader against the Crusaders. First pitch of the opener is scheduled for 12-noon back at Bollinger Field. Live stats will be available for both games with the links to be posted on this page.
