KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2019) – The Skyline Conference announced its weekly award winners for men's and women's cross country, men's soccer and women's volleyball on Monday afternoon and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy had a total of eight student-athletes honored for their performances during the week of Oct. 14-20.
The Mariners swept the awards for both men's and women's cross country.
On the men's side, sophomore Aodhan Meyer (South Kingston, R.I.) was named the Runner of the Week and freshman Will Bucher (Carlisle, Pa.) earned Rookie of the Week honors. Meyer was the first Mariner to cross the finish line at Rowan's Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday, placing 83rd in the ultra-competitive 8K race with a time of 25:58.7 and Bucher finished the same race in 26:54.2.

Senior Kaleigh D'Arcy (White Plains, N.Y.) was selected as the Women's Runner of the Week, while freshman Sayra Raya (Wasco, Calif.) garnered Rookie of the Week honors for the third straight week. D'Arcy led the Mariners to a 13th-place team finish at Rowan's Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday, as she placed 39th in the competitive 6K race with a time of 22:44.5, and Raya placed 56th in the same race in 23:02.3.

Up next for the USMMA cross country teams is the Skyline Championship Meet on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31, hosted by Mount St. Mary College at the Hudson Valley Sportsdome in Milton, N.Y. The women's 6K race is scheduled for 1 p.m., followed by the men's race at 2 p.m.
In women's volleyball news, three Mariners received accolades after the Mariners' two straight-set wins last week. Senior Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) was named the Libero of the Week, freshman outside hitter Paige Smith (Virginia Beach, Va.) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week and senior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) landed on the weekly honor roll. Ibinson recorded 5.33 digs per set, as she picked up 13 on Tuesday night home vs. St. Joe's-L.I. and had 19 on Thursday at St. Joe's-Brooklyn. Smith led the Mariners with 4.33 kills per set and back-to-back double-double efforts with a match-high 12 kills to go along with 11 digs, four assisted blocks and three aces on Tuesday and a 14-kill, 11-dig effort with two assisted blocks and two aces on Thursday. Kappas recorded 61 assists in the two matches, finishing the week with 10.17 assists per set. The senior also recorded a team-best six service aces over the two matches.

The Mariners are back in action tomorrow night, Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a home Skyline match against Sarah Lawrence beginning at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
And finally, senior Matt McCurnin (Newark, Del.) earned a spot on the men's soccer weekly honor roll after his two-goal, one-assist performance in the Mariners' 5-2 road win at St. Joe's-Brooklyn last Tuesday.
