Thomas M. Scanlan Jr. ’60 was a two-sport letterwinner in football (four years) and track and field (one year) at the Academy. He was a key factor in turning the football program around after several dismal years and captained the 1958 and 1959 squads which each posted winning seasons. The guard and four-year starter was named All-East and All-East West as a senior. Scanlan won the 1959 Academy Espirit de Corps for “the greatest contribution to the team and good sportsmanship, team spirit and fair play.” Upon graduation from USMMA, he entered the U.S. Navy as an Ensign and played right tackle and nose tackle for the Norfolk Navy Tars in 1960. Scanlan served as a tri-captain and was selected to the All-Seas Service Team that year. Additionally, Scanlan was awarded the third place medal in the New York Metro Senior AAU Wrestling Tournament in 1960. Furthermore, he received the Professional Achievement Award and the Maryland Manufacturing Executive of the Year Award from the Governor of Maryland.
