Arthur Mercante will always be known as the father of Kings Point boxing. An excellent judge of talent and character, Mercante took midshipman who had never fought before and turned them into national contenders. During their one season of intercollegiate completion, the 1946 boxing team reached the National Intercollegiate Boxing Tournament, enjoying success against the likes of West Point, Georgetown, and the University of Maryland. Mercante most successful pupil was 1990 Kings Point Hall of Fame inductee, Stan Wheatley ’47. Wheatley reached the finals of the boxing tournament in 1946 and suffered his only defeat of the year to the national champion. A 1995 Inductee of the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Mercante is a world-renowned referee. He has refereed 117 championship fights across the globe for the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frasier, Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, and Mike Tyson.
