Klages was a three-year letter winner for the Kings Point swimming team in 1948, 1951, and 1952. For a three year period, Klages was 24-1 in dual meet competitions in the 440 yard freestyle event and registered at least one first place finish in each dual meet. He was a member of the Kings Point swim teams that were undefeated and Metropolitan Collegiate Champions in 1949 and 1952. In 1952, Klages collected no less than 10 medals in the Metropolitan Easter Collegiate and AAU Championship. He also anchored the Kings Point 400 yard relay team to the Metropolitan Collegiate Championship. Klages still competes in the Masters Swimming Program. He currently holds four East Cost swimming records in the 100, 200, 400, and 800 meter freestyle in the 60-64 age group. He still owns 200 and 400 freestyle records in the 55-59 age group that he established in 1986. Klages was named a 1992 Masters All American in the 100 meter freestyle after posting the fastest time in the United States.
