John Gelke was a four-year letter winner in football, a three-year letter winner in baseball and was recipient of the 1955 Adm. Giles Trophy. On the diamond, Gelke was selected MVP of the Knickerbocker Conference in 1955 and was named to the All-Star team in 1952 and 1955. He captained the Kings Point baseball team as a senior while also being named to the Long Island All-Star team in football the previous fall. Gelke was scouted by several major league baseball and football teams while at the Academy but pursued a career in the U.S. Navy; he retired in 1984 as a naval captain.
