Bio as of 2012 when awarded Acta Non Verba Award
Ray Dombrowski is the 10th recipient of the Acta Non Verba Award, which is the highest honor presented by the USMMA Department of Athletics. Awarded biennially, the Acta Non Verba Award is presented to those who have helped build and enhance Kings Point Athletics to what it is today.
Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the USMMA Alumni Association and Foundation (AFF), Ray has worked tirelessly in his spare time to support and promote the Academy and its athletic teams. His generosity stems from the desire to see the Midshipmen thrive in an environment that includes continuous funding and support, so that adequate facilities, coaching and equipment are readily available. Ray has made numerous contributions to both the Academy and Athletic Department to help not only meet such goals, but also to encourage others to stand with him in this cause.
As an avid golfer and supporter of the Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classics, Ray is always thinking of ways he can support the tour, whether by bidding generously in its auctions, donating items or playing when time allows. Ray can also be seen on the sidelines of several Mariner sporting events throughout the year cheering on the Blue & Gray.
With the Academy always near and dear to his heart, Ray is a Managing Director with Alvarez & Marsal in New York. He specializes in assisting corporations in developing and implementing financial turnaround strategies. With more than 15 years of financial restructuring experience, Ray has served in interim CEO, CFO and Chief Restructuring Officer roles, as an adviser to large and mid-size companies both in and out of bankruptcy.
He has expertise across a wide range of industries, including telecommunications, energy, financial services, transportation, real estate and entertainment. He most recently served as Chief Restructuring Officer of Chemtura Corporation, a $3 billion specialty chemical company, which successfully emerged from bankruptcy after paying all creditors in full, along with providing a return to the pre-petition equity. For his work in Chemtura, Ray was the 2011 recipient of the Turnaround Management Association’s Turnaround of the Year-Mega Company Award.
Ray also assists private equity firms with due diligence, integration and profit-improvement activities. He led select finance operations for a private equity sponsor of a $1.2 billion energy-related concern. Within nine months, he achieved $100 million in working capital improvements, reduced the company’s leverage from 5.5:1 to 3.5:1, installed all Treasury policies and procedures for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, and supported the company’s successful initial public offering.
Prior to joining A&M, Ray Mr. Dombrowski was Senior Vice President and CFO of Ogden Corporation, where he led the successful restructuring of the $3 billion conglomerate. Previously, he served for 14 years as a senior executive with Bell Atlantic Corporation, where he was responsible for the company’s $10 billion leasing, finance and real estate businesses, as well as structured finance for the corporation.
A 1976 honors graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Ray earned a juris doctor, with honors and a master of laws degree in taxation from Temple University. He is a member of the Financial Executives Institute and is a frequent lecturer on operational restructuring issues. He currently resides in Haddonfield, New Jersey with his wife, Sylvia.
