Channing Meyer '17 joins the United States Merchant Marine Academy football staff as the Mariners' cornerbacks coach for the 2026 season. A former defensive back for the Mariners, Meyer returns to Kings Point nearly a decade after completing his playing career with the program.
Meyer was a four-year member of the Merchant Marine football program from 2013-16. He began his collegiate career at quarterback before transitioning to the defensive side of the ball, where he became a starting defensive back during his junior and senior seasons. As a senior in 2016, Meyer recorded 42 tackles and a team-high eight pass breakups while appearing in all nine games.
A native of Norman, Okla., Meyer attended Norman North High School, where he was an All-District performer and set the school's single-season receptions record before arriving at Kings Point.
Following his time at the Academy, Meyer commissioned as an officer in the United States Coast Guard. During his Coast Guard career, he has served in a variety of operational and leadership assignments, including as a Deck Watch Officer aboard USCGC MOHAWK, Officer in Charge of a Law Enforcement Detachment at Tactical Law Enforcement Team South, Operations Officer aboard USCGC HARRIET LANE, and in operational planning roles supporting Coast Guard missions throughout Oceania and the Indo-Pacific.
Meyer returned to Kings Point in 2026 as the Coast Guard Liaison Officer to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and joined the football coaching staff shortly thereafter.
Meyer earned his Bachelor of Science in Maritime Logistics and Security from USMMA in 2017 and his U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage Merchant Mariner Credential.
