By Courtney AielloFebruary 21, 2010
HOBOKEN, N.J.
- The
No. 13 nationally-ranked U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team captured
its third-straight Centennial Conference championship compiling 88 points on
Saturday evening at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
In addition to the team success, three individuals defeated their opponents
in the finals: juniors Jordan Alfaro (Fayetteville, N.C.), Dan Twito (Cedar Falls, Iowa), and Vincent Renault (Plymouth, Mass.).
At
125 pounds, Alfaro seemingly breezed through his competition, and gained the
Mariners' first individual championship title with a closely contested 3-2
decision over McDaniel College’s Earl Eppard.
Twito posted Kings Point’s
second individual championship at the 157-pound weight class. The Iowa native reached the
finals after getting through both Muhlenberg College and Stevens and then finally downing
Washington and Lee University’s David Dennis, 5-3.
At the 165-pound weight class, Renault rounded out USMMA’s individual champions. The midshipman effortlessly
defeated Washington
and Lee's Keith Jaworski 16-0 in his first bought. Renault continued with a
defeat over Harris Papas of Ursinus College and then proceeded to down Stevens’ Joey Favia in a 3-2 triumph.
At the
149-pound weight class, sophomore Martin Bell (Eaton Rapids, Mich.) advanced to the finals with wins
over Gettysburg's
Michael Slabinski and McDaniel's Brent Lowe. The sophomore then gained the
second place title when he fell to Ursinus' Connor McCormick, 14-4 in the final round.
Junior Justin Diesel (Minisink Valley, N.Y.) also gained a second place finish as he fell to Stevens’ No. 1 seed Bobby
Bishop, 3-1, in the 174-pound weight class.
No. 2-seeded senior Eric Vincent (Trussville, Ala.) earned
second place in the 197-pound range. The Alabama native finished with a 4-2 loss
against Ursinius’ Connor McNamara.
Also taking second place for the Mariners
was junior Judd Connell (Hastings, Minn.). At the 285-pound weight class, the No. 2-seeded
Connell fell to McDaniel’s Brock Glotfelty, who was named Centennial Wrestler of the Year, 6-3.
