Landmark Conference-foe Scranton Downs Tennis, 9-0

SCRANTON, Pa. - On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
tennis team fell in all singles and doubles matches to Landmark
Conference-opponent the University of Scranton in Scranton,
Pa. With the victory, the Royals
improved to 13-5 overall and 5-1 in league play. Following the defeat, the
Mariners dropped to 4-7 on the season and 0-6 in the conference.
In the first singles match of the day, Scott Melideo defeated USMMA sophomore Jeff Gulitus (Cincinnati,
Ohio), 6-4 and 6-1. In the
No. 2 singles play, Carl Caceres took
down Kings Point senior William Coulter,
6-1 and 6-0. In the third singles match, Tim
McGurrin beat USMMA rookie Biondi
Phua by scores of 6-3 and 6-0.
Joe Morra defeated
USMMA senior Patricia Greene, 6-0
and 6-1, while Michael Arrighi beat
Kings Point senior Blair Voltz by
the same decisions. Mike Pannone took
down Mariners’ freshman Timothy Buxton, 6-0
and 6-1, in the No. 6 singles match.
In doubles action, Gulitus and Coulter fell to the Scranton duo of Melideo
and Morra, 8-1. Arrighi and Bennett
Kelley downed Greene and Phua, 8-2. In the final doubles match, Pannone and
Devin Patel were victorious against
USMMA’s pair of Buxton and Voltz, 8-5.
Head Coach Corbin Sutton and the Mariners return to action
tomorrow when they face St. Joseph’s College of Long Island at home. The opening serve
is set for 4:30 p.m.
