CALDWELL, N.J. (Oct. 15, 2017) – On Sunday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team competed in the Cougar Chase, hosted by Caldwell University in New Jersey, and the Mariners won the event. It was the squad's first team win of the season, as they finished ahead of the field of nine teams with a total of 67 points – three ahead of second-place FDU-Florham (70).
Sophomore Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) led the Mariners with a sixth-place finish in the 5K race with a time of 21:17.38. Classmate Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) finished one spot behind Buonerba in seventh place, crossing the line in 21:30.16.
Sophomore Valerie Bowman (Newark, Ohio) and freshman Kelly Caubo (Phoenix, Md.) were the next two Mariners to finish, as Bowman came in 11th (22:29.07) and Caubo placed 13th (22:35.16). Junior Erica Lawlor (Stafford Springs, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for USMMA when she completed the course in 24:53.01, which was good for 31st place (30 points).

The Mariners return to action in two weekends for the Skyline Conference Championship Meet, hosted by Purchase College up in Westchester County. The event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29, on the campus of Purchase College. More information will be available closer to the event date on the USMMA Women's Cross Country Schedule Page.
