Women’s Cross Country Finishes Sixth At Trinity’s Bantam Invite

MANCHESTER, Conn. (Sept. 9, 2017) – On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team opened the 2017 season with a sixth-place showing at Trinity College's Bantam Invitational at Wickham Park in Connecticut. The Mariners recorded 181 points at the event, while hosts Trinity scored 29 to win the Invite. 

Sophomore Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) was the Mariners' top finisher, coming in 30th place with a time of 22:28.8 in the 5K course. Classmate Carissa Buonerba ( Atlanta, Ga.) placed 35th in 22:40.1 and freshman Kelly Caubo (Phoenix, Md.) was 47th in 23:22.4. Rounding out the Merchant Marine scorers in the race were sophomore Valerie Bowman (Newark, Ohio), who came in 51st with a time of 23:40.2 and classmate Alyssa DeGuzman (Stafford, Va.), who placed 54th in 23:47.2. 

In a head-to-head matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard, the Mariners came in second place with a score of 50 points, while the Bears took the top spot with 15 points.

The Mariners return to action next Sunday, Sept. 17, when they take part in the Queensborough Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. First race of the day is scheduled for 10 a.m.
