Holoubek Leads the Way for the Mariners at Landmark Championships

The United States Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team came in seventh at the 2012 Landmark Conference Championships, scoring 191 points Saturday afternoon in Altoona, PA.

The meet was hosted by Juniata at the Fort Roberdeau historical site and consisted of all eight Landmark members.  On a day featuring ideal racing conditions, Kings Point improved on their 2011 score by eight points.

Senior Gretchen Holoubek (pictured) led the Mariners placing 15th overall; just one place shy of qualifying for an All-Conference distinction.  Her time of 25:13 was her best 6K of the season.  It was also the highest a female Mariner has finished in the conference championships over the past five years.

Sophomore captain Amber Kinter and freshman Madeline Sullivan rounded out the top three with times of 27:18 and 27:46 respectively.

"It was a tough day overall for our ladies, said Head Coach Greg Lott.  "We were missing a handful of our girls, which really hurt.  While we were a little nicked up and exhausted from finals week, our girls really ran hard.  The next two weeks will be very good for us to see if we can get the team closer to full strength; I'm fully confident our ladies will rebound with a strong performance at NCAA regionals."

USMMA will have a tune up at the ECAC Championships next weekend in Williamstown, MA before heading to the NCAA Regional Championships the following weekend in Rochester, NY.
