BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – A week after taking second place at the Purchase Invitational, the Kings Point women did themselves one better on Saturday. They finished first among Division III schools and community colleges at the C.W. Post Cross Country Invitational.
Just as important, the Mariners broke personal bests across the board on a 5K course considered in good shape on a perfect day for racing.
"Several of our girls broke major minute barriers today," an elated head coach Gregory Lott said. "There's no doubt the results will give them a significant boost of confidence.
"While I'm ecstatic with our women as a whole, I'm particularly impressed with Ellie Coulter. She stepped up as our No. 4 runner with a huge PR of well over a minute and broke the 22-minute barrier."
Coulter, a freshman, ran the course in 21:54.
Freshman Kelly Whalen was clocked in 20:57, followed by senior Lauren Rattan (21:30), freshman Amber Kinter (21:51), Coulter, freshman Mary Silk (22:55), senior Renee Hogan (23:50A) and freshman Baylee Grier (24:13).
The fastest 5K time by a Merchant Marine women's runner in 2010 was 21:32 by Gretchen Holoubek. The top two runners bested that mark on Saturday.
Among the Division II teams the Mariners bested included Caldwell College, the University of Bridgeport, the University of the District of Columbia, Queens College and Pace University. Division II teams and Fordham University (Division) also competed.
The Mariners will have next weekend off, but they will return to action at the Paul Shore Invitational at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
