Freshmen women off to good start at cross-country opener at West Point

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After watching his first-year runners compete at the West Point Open, Kings Point women's cross country coach Gregory Lott walked away quite enthusiastic about the season.

Freshman Kelly Whalen finished third overall among the Division III schools competing in the opening meet of the season as five freshmen captured five of the top seven spots for the Mariners.

Whalen was timed in 21:43 over the 5K course at West Point Golf Course. Freshman Amber Kinter (21:57) was sixth and senior Lauren Rattan (22:08) took eighth place among Division III competitors.

The Mariners ran on a mountainous course at the U.S. Military Academy, the most difficult course they will compete on this season.

"Our girls have made great strides from a year ago," Mariners coach Gregory Lott said. "We're a very young team, but our few upperclassmen are doing a fantastic job of creating a unified group. The meet at West Point was the start to a great season."

The Mariners' opponents included Division I powers West Point and Manhattan College , Ramapo College and Monroe College from Division III and the U.S. Military Academy Prep.

The Mariners will compete at the Purchase College Invitational in Purchase, N.Y. on Saturday, Sept. 10.
