COLT STATE PARK, R.I. - On Saturday, the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team competed in the ECAC Championships in Colt State Park, R.I. As a team, the Mariners finished 26th out of 39 schools. Four of the six Mariners participating ran personal bests.
The team was led once again by sophomore Gretchen Holoubek (Saverna Park, Md.), who ran the 6k in 25:23. Senior Lindsay Watkins (Ventura, Calif.) finished with a time of 27:12. The Mariners were also helped by personal best runs from freshman Chelsea Tapper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) (27:34) and senior Cristina Fernandez-O'Toole (Washington Depot, Conn.) (27:40). Freshman Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.), running in her first meet of the season, was the team's fifth scorer with a time of 28:22. After badly rolling her ankle, junior Renee Hogan (Sterling, Va.) gutted through an effort only 13 seconds off of her best-ever performance (29:49).
"It was a big day for our ladies as they are beginning to realize their potential. They got some much needed rest this week after coming off of a grueling week of finals. I am proud that their hard work throughout the year was exhibited in today's performance," Head Coach Gregory Lott said after the meet. "The women are ready to show even greater improvement next week as they head to the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet."
Head Coach Gregory Lott and the Mariners return to action on Saturday when they travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to compete in the NCAA Qualifying Meet.
