ONEONTA, N.Y. – On Saturday, the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's cross country team competed in the NCAA Regional Qualifying Meet in Oneonta, N.Y. and finished 32nd out of 40 teams.
Sophomore Gretchen Holoubek (Saverna Park, Md.) led the way once again for USMMA with a timing of 26:00.
Senior team captain Cristina Fernandez-O'Toole (Washington Depot, Conn.) dropped over a minute of her lifetime best time and crossed the finish line at 26:38 in the final cross country meet of her career.
Senior Lindsay Watkins (Ventura, Calif.) ran just eight seconds off her best effort this year (26:43).
Freshman Kelly Hodges (Lakewood, Colo.) bettered her 6K time by 31 seconds with a finish of 27:49, while fellow rookie Chelsea Tapper (Brooklyn, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring places for the women with her second fastest finish of her career (27:51).
"The women have made great strides this season. Cristina's leadership was instrumental in helping to build the women's program into a cohesive unit," Head Coach Gregory Lott said after the meet. "They have come such a long way and developed the foundation on which to build a strong women's cross country program at the Academy. I'm elated with both their efforts and performances."
