Gaiser Names Kappas, Ibinson & Hudson 2019 Volleyball Captains

Gaiser Names Kappas, Ibinson & Hudson 2019 Volleyball Captains

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (June 18, 2019) – Rising-seniors Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.), Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) were recently named team captains for the upcoming 2019 USMMA women's volleyball season, head coach Tim Gaiser announced this week. The trio will lead the Mariners both on and off the court throughout the 2019 campaign, slated to begin in late August.

This is the second-straight year that Kappas will serve as a team captain. She has been named an All-Skyline performer all three seasons at Kings Point, earning First Team honors in 2017 and 2018, as well as a Second Team selection after her freshman season in 2016. Kappas has played in 65 matches throughout her career, serving up a total of 1,955 assists in 209 sets for an impressive 9.35 assists per set. She also has 498 digs (2.38 per set) to her credit, as well as 108 service aces (0.52 per set).

"I am very excited to have Kyleigh return as a team captain for the second year in her career," said Gaiser. "She's a special person and player, and for anybody in any sport to be captain over multiple years is a true reflection of the quality of her play on the court, and her character off the court. Kyleigh has been a leader here at Kings Point since her freshman year, running a 5-1 or single-setter system offense, and I will be looking to her once again in 2019 to take charge of the play on the court."

Ibinson served as the Mariners' primary libero throughout the 2018 season. She has played in 78 matches over three seasons, compiling 696 career digs in 237 sets, for 2.94 digs per set. Ibinson also contributed offensively in her first two seasons and has a career total of 227 kills (0.96 per set) to go along with 116 service aces (0.49 per set).

"It's truly a pleasure to announce Nicole's appointment as a team captain this 2019 season," commented Gaiser. "She has really developed and grown as a person outside of volleyball. That maturity translates perfectly in the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy campus environment to be a success both on and off the court. Nicole put up some terrific numbers in her junior year as a libero, and combined with her success after moving her to a six-rotation outside hitter role during her sophomore season, I know she's willing to step outside her comfort zone and do whatever it takes for this team to be successful."

Hudson played an integral role in the back row for the Mariners in 2018. She has played in 30 matches over two seasons in her career and has a total of 27 service aces in 62 sets, for 0.44 aces per set. She has also gobbled up 99 digs (1.60 per set), including a number of clutch acrobatic pick-ups to keep rallies going.

"Alaina's outstanding work ethic, dedication to succeed and perseverance to grind through the tough times will aid her well in her role as a team captain and academic leader in 2019," said Gaiser. "I couldn't be more proud of Alaina and what she has done not only to be on the team, but to become a leader as well. She has reinvented herself personally and professionally, and what she has accomplished and done here at the Academy both on and off the court is a real testament to her integrity."
