KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2018) – The Skyline Conference announced the postseason honors for women's volleyball on Monday afternoon and the league's head coaches selected USMMA freshman outside hitter Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) as the Skyline Rookie of the Year. They also tabbed third-year head coach Tim Gaiser as the Coach of the Year, and selected three Mariners to the All-Skyline First Team – Gilbertson, junior setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) and senior outside hitter Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.).
Gilbertson is the Skyline leader and ranks high nationally in points per game (fifth with 5.13 per game) and kills per game (12th with 4.25 per game). She also ranks fourth in the conference with 0.76 service aces per set, a mark that is 14th in the nation, and is fifth in the league with a .263 hitting percentage. She was named the Skyline Rookie of the Week a league-best four times (Sept. 24, Oct. 1, Oct. 15 & Oct. 22).
Gaiser led the Mariners to an 18-6 overall record, including a perfect 10-0 mark against Skyline Conference opponents. This was the second season under Gaiser that USMMA captured the Skyline Regular Season Title, as they earned it outright this year after grabbing a share of it in 2016.
The Mariners rattled off a program-best 15-match winning streak from Sept. 22 to Oct. 27. They lead the conference in hitting percentage (.222), opponent hitting percentage (.055 - which also ranks first in the nation), assists per set (11.29), kills per set (11.89) and service aces per set (3.21), while also ranking third in the Skyline with 1.30 blocks per set.
Lefler ranks second in the Skyline in both kills per set (3.95) and points per set (4.59), while her .220 hitting percentage is good for ninth in the conference. Throughout the season, the senior was named the Skyline Player of the Week a league-best three times (Sept. 4, Oct. 8 & Oct. 15), while also landing on the Skyline Weekly Honor Roll once (Sept. 10).
Kappas, who missed the first four weeks of the season (in which the Mariners started the year 4-5), came back and helped lead the team to a 14-1 record to close out the year. In conference matches only, the junior dished out a Skyline-best 11.48 assists per set – part of her 10.67 assist per set for the entire season. She was named the Skyline Player of the Week twice (Oct. 1 & Oct. 22) and also landed on the Skyline Weekly Honor Roll on Oct. 29.
