Volleyball Season Comes To Heartbreaking End With Five-Set Loss To Mount St. Vincent In Skyline Semis

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 1, 2018) – The top-seeded USMMA women's volleyball team lost a hard-fought, five-set thriller to visiting #4 seed Mount St. Vincent in the Skyline semifinals on Thursday night in a packed Liebertz Gymnasium. With the loss, the Mariners end the season with an 18-6 record, while the Dolphins improve to 14-14 and move on to face #3 seed St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday in the Skyline Finals. 

Three Mariners recorded double-doubles in the match, as senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) led all players with 20 kills to go along with 13 digs, freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) had 15 kills and 10 digs and junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out a match-high 42 assist with 12 digs. 

Freshmen Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) and Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) both chipped in with seven kills apiece and junior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) picked up a team-best 13 digs. Classmate Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) also chipped in defensively with eight digs on the night. 

The Dolphins took the first set, 25-17, but Merchant Marine rallied to tie the match up with a 25-23 victory in the second set. The two teams traded back-to-back 25-18 decisions to set up a decisive fifth set. 

Mount St. Vincent completely dominated the start of the fifth set, scoring 13-straight points to open up a 13-1 lead. The Mariners wouldn't go quietly, as they chipped away at the Dolphin lead, but they eventually dropped the set by the final of 15-8. 

For Mount St. Vincent, freshman Samantha Schroeder led the way with a double-double of her own with 13 kills and 12 digs. Classmate Madison Gale nearly had a triple-double with a team-best 19 assists to go along with nine kills and eight digs. 

Sophomore Alexandra Rio picked up a match-high 16 digs on the night, while senior Patsy Sewell led all players on the evening with six service aces. Sewell also chipped in with 15 assists and seven digs. Junior Tara Maloney contributed eight kills and nine digs.
