KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball defeated Yeshiva University in straight sets on Thursday night in a "road" Skyline Conference match played at the Liebertz Gymnasium. In victory, the Mariners improve to 14-5 (6-0 Skyline) on the season, while the Maccabees fall to 1-10 (0-5 Skyline).
USMMA recorded a total of 26 service aces in the 25-9, 25-8, 25-6 win, with freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) leading the way with six. Sophomore Jourdin Thompson (Brighton, Colo.) and freshman Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.) both registered five aces apiece and six other Mariners had at least one.
Three different Mariners had a match-high six kills apiece – Thompson and freshmen Raven Kirsch (South Wales, N.Y.) and Annie Bladow (Fall City, Wash.). Freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) dished out 22 assists over two sets, while junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) had nine in the opening set. Defensively, digs were low in general, as Merchant Marine had just 13 on the match, with five different Mariners recording two digs each.
USMMA hit an impressive .547 on the night (34k-5e-53a), while holding the Macs to a .000 hitting clip (8k-8e-29a).
For Yeshiva, sophomore Rebekah Bargaser had a team-best three kills, while senior Batya Schreier added six assists and a team-best four digs.
The Mariners are back in action this Sunday, Oct. 20, when they travel to SUNY Maritime for a Skyline tri-match. They will take on the host Privateers at 11 a.m. before a neutral-site match against Farmingdale State at 1 p.m. Live stats and live video feeds of the matches will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
