Volleyball Sends Seniors Off With A Pair Of Straight-Set Skyline Wins On Sunday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 14, 2018) – The USMMA women's volleyball team won both matches of its home, Skyline Conference tri-match on Sunday in straight sets, defeating St. Joseph's-Brooklyn 25-13, 25-14, 25-20 and Sarah Lawrence 25-12, 25-14, 25-14. With the pair of victories, the Mariners' record now sits at 13-5 (5-0 Skyline) on the season. 

Prior to the first match of the day, the Merchant Marine women's volleyball program paid tribute to its two senior student-assistant coaches, Austin Bourgeois  and Connor Morris, and two senior student-athletes, Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) and Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.), who were taking part in their final matches at the Liebertz Gymnasium with a  special Senior Day ceremony.

In the opening victory over SJC-Brooklyn, Lefler led all players with 20 kills on a .375 hitting percentage (20k-5e-40a). Junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) recorded a match-best 20 assists over two sets and just missed out a double-double with nine digs, while junior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) had a team-high 11 digs. Freshman setter Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) contributed to the offense with 10 assists in the third set.

As a team, the Mariners hit .253 in the first match (38k-13e-99a) and held the Bears to a -.035 (16k-19e-85a). 

In the nightcap against Sarah Lawrence, Lefler once again led all players in the match with 15 kills, this time hitting at a .400 clip (15k-1e-35a). She was one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Kappas registered 23 assists over two sets and Pinzon had 11 in the final set. Defensively, freshman libero Katie Sweeney (East Rockaway, N.Y.) had a team-best 11 digs over two sets. 

The Mariners hit .340 (42k-8e-100a) in the match and held the Gryphons to a -.081 hitting percentage (13k-20e-86a). 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Mariners' upcoming match against Yeshiva University this Thursday, Oct. 18, has been moved to Kings Point at the Liebertz Gym, but will remain a Yeshiva home match. More information on that match will be available early this week on www.USMMASports.com.
