KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2018) – The USMMA women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches at home on Saturday over Brooklyn College and Bard in a non-conference trimatch. The victories improve the Mariners' record to 8-5 on the season.
In the opening win over the Brooklyn Bulldogs, freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded yet another double-double with a career-high 21 kills to go along with 12 digs. She hit a team-best .447 in the match (21k-4e-38a), while also adding two aces and a block.
Two other Mariners just missed out on double-doubles, as junior Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) registered 37 assists and nine digs, while senior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added 13 kills and nine digs. Freshman Cadee Fromm (Enid, Okla.) contributed at the net with a match-high three blocks and junior libero Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led all players in the match with 18 digs.
Brooklyn was led by senior Michaela Appel, who had five kills and 10 digs. Sophomore Yana Shaposhnikova contributed three kills and 12 digs in the match and freshman Ezri Shor dished out a team-best five assists.
In the three-set victory over the Bard Raptors to end the day, Gilbertson again led the Mariners with six kills over two sets. Three other players had five-kills apiece for USMMA – Lefler, Fromm and freshman Shelby Bowman (Redmond, Wash.).
Freshman Katie Sweeney (East Rockaway, N.Y.) led Merchant Marine with 12 digs in one set as the libero, while Kappas and freshman Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) split the setting duties – Kappas recording 16 assists over two sets and Pinzon with 10 helpers in the final set.
11 different players recorded a kill for the Mariners in the victory – Gilbertson with six, Lefler, Fromm and Bowman with five apiece, sophomore Jourdin Thompson (Brighton, Colo.) with three, freshman Juliet Vendl (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.), Pinzon and freshman Raven Kirsch (South Wales, N.Y.) with two each, and Sweeney and classmate Annie Bladow (Fall City, Wash.) with one apiece.
The Raptors were led by sophomore Mikala L'Hote, who put down a team-best five kills on a .357 hitting percentage (5k-0e-14a). Senior setter Victoria Chou had nine assists and 13 digs, while senior libero Emily Anastasi led all players with 15 digs.
The Mariners are back on the hardwood this coming Wednesday, Oct. 3, when they host Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
