NEW LONDON, Conn. (Sept. 13, 2018) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost in straight-sets to arch-rival Coast Guard on Thursday night at the Bears' Roland Hall Gymnasium. The scores of the match were 25-21, 25-19 and 25-16. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 2-3 on the season, while Coast Guard improves to 10-1.
Freshman Taylor Gilbertson (Phoenix, Ariz.) led all players in the match with 12 kills and also picked up seven digs on the night. Classmate Brittney Pinzon (Fullerton, Calif.) had 17 assists and tied for the match-high with nine digs. For the first time this season, the Mariners hit in the negative, producing a -.042 hitting percentage over the three sets (22K-26E-96A).
The Bears were led by sophomore Bridget Boyle, who recorded 10 kills on a .364 hitting percentage. Freshman Destiny Johnson added seven kills and hit a team-best .400 clip (7K-1E-15A). Junior Makenna Martin and freshman Nikki Sefcik split the setting duties, with Martin dishing out a match-high 18 assists and Sefcik registering 12 helpers. Martin and freshman Amanda Dake tied Pinzon for the match-high with nine digs apiece.
The Mariners have this coming weekend off from competition and will return to action next Wednesday, Sept. 19, when they travel to Stevens Institute for a rematch of the 2017 NCAA First Round matchup.
