POTSDAM, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost its NCAA Tournament First Round matchup against Stevens Institute in straight sets on Friday up at Clarkson University. The Mariners end their memorable season with a 17-8 overall record, while the Ducks, who move on to face Ithaca in the Second Round on Saturday, improve to 27-7. The scores of the match were 25-20, 25-10 and 25-16.
Sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) recorded a double-double in the match with 24 assists to go along with a team-high 13 digs. Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) both led Merchant Marine offensively with seven kills apiece, with Lefler also picking up six digs and Carmon hitting at a team-best .385 (7k-2e-13ta).
Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) added five kills, three aces and a block for nine total points on the afternoon. Classmate Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) contributed 10 digs serving as the squad's libero for the match and also recorded two service aces.
For Stevens, sophomore Sara Hain led all players in the match with nine kills, while classmate Casey King and senior Emily Singleton both added seven kills each. Sophomore setter Julie Greco dished out a match-high 29 assists and classmate Taleen Mitchell picked up a match-best 14 digs, while senior Sydni Horner added 11 digs from the back row. Sophomore Shelby Stewart had six aces, four kills and three blocks for a total of 12 points, the most on the afternoon, and Singleton led all players with five blocks.
The Mariners had a remarkable year in 2017 under second-year head coach Tim Gaiser, earning the #2 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament and winning the Championship with a five-set thriller over Mount St. Vincent. It was USMMA's first conference title since 2001 and the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament since then as well.
