Volleyball Drops A Heartbreaker To Hunter, 3-2, At Home Wednesday Night

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 11, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team suffered a tough non-conference loss on Wednesday night to Hunter College, 3-2, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The defeat drops the Mariners' record to 10-5, while the Hawks improve to 18-3. 

All but one of the sets were decided by two points, with the visitors claiming victory in the opener, 26-24, followed by the Mariners taking the second and third, 25-23 and 26-24, respectively. However, Hunter forced the decisive fifth set with a 25-18 triumph in the fourth and then squeaked out of Kings Point with a match victory after a 16-14 win in the fifth. 

Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) both recorded double-doubles, as Pope tied for the match-high with a season-best 18 kills to go along with a team- and season-high 26 digs, while Lefler put down 17 kills and picked up 12 digs. Senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) was one kill and four blocks shy of a triple-double with 12 digs, nine kills and a team-high six blocks. 

Sophomore Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) led the Mariners and matched her career-high of 45 assists and was also one dig away from a double-double with nine digs. Senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) picked up 12 digs on defense, classmate Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) chipped in with seven kills and four blocks and fellow senior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) recorded nine digs from the back row. 

For Hunter, senior Julia Connolly tied Pope with a match-high 18 kills and was one of three Hawks to registered double-doubles with 12 digs. Junior setter Miranda Hogan led all players with 48 assists and picked up 10 digs, while classmate Taylor Haiduk contributed 13 kills and 15 digs. Junior libero Haley Trunkett had a match-high 34 digs and was one of five Hunter players with double-digit digs as freshman Sunghee Cho picked up 10 digs. 

The Mariners are back at it this Sunday, Oct. 15, when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., to take part in a Skyline Conference tri-match. Merchant Marine takes on hosts St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at 11 a.m. and then will square off against Sarah Lawrence at 1 p.m. Live stats and live video feeds will be available for both matches with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page
