Mariners Right Ship After A First-Set Loss, Top Mount St. Mary, 3-1, On The Road

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2017) – On Wednesday night, the USMMA women's volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-1 road victory in a Skyline Conference matchup up at Mount St. Mary College. The Mariners improve to 10-4 (3-1 Skyline) on the season, while the Knights fall to 6-15 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat. 

The match was so close that only one of the four sets was decided by more than two points. Merchant Marine came within a point of securing the first set, 24-21, but MSMC stormed back to win the opener with five-straight points, 26-24. The Mariners won both the second and third sets by identical scores of 25-23, before finishing off the Knights in the fourth, 25-19. 

Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with 14 kills and also recorded a double-double with 13 digs. Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) also registered double-doubles, as Lefler had 10 kills and 11 digs and Miller dished out 36 assists with 14 digs. 

The Mariners picked up an impressive 78 digs on the night and a total of six players had double-digit dig nights – senior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) led the team with 17, Miller had 14, Pope had 13, junior Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) had 12, senior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had 11 (to go along with nine kills) and Lefler had 10 digs. Senior Tichina Carmon (Greenville, N.C.) contributed a team-high four blocks in the victory. 

For Mount St. Mary, freshman Renee Hydo led attackers with 12 kills and also picked up 12 digs in the back row. Senior libero Julimar Figueroa recorded a match-high 21 digs and junior Kim Gries tallied 28 assists. 

The Mariners have a week until their next competition, as they'll play host to non-conference opponent Hunter College next Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
