CASTINE, Maine (Sept. 17, 2017) – The USMMA women's volleyball team concluded action at the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic on Sunday up at Maine Maritime. The Mariners lost to the host Maine Maritime Mariners in four sets (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 25-22) and fall to 6-2 on the season, while Maine Maritime improves to 7-5.
Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) picked up her second straight double-double, as she registered a team-high 11 kills and 19 digs to go along with a team-best three service aces. Sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 29 assists and also added seven digs defensively. Senior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) contributed in the back row with 10 digs.
Lefler and Kappas were both named to the Maritime Classic All-Tournament Team for the second straight year for their performances over the three matches this weekend.
For Maine Maritime, sophomore Alexa Cacacie led all players in the match with 16 kills, while sophomore setter Sydney Adams had a double-double with a match-high 34 assists as well as 10 digs. Sophomore libero Maria Perez picked 26 digs to lead all defenders.
Merchant Marine is back in action on Thursday night, Sept. 21, when the Mariners host arch-rival Coast Guard at 6 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The winner of that match will receive a point towards the overall score for the 2017-18 Superintendents' Trophy.
