Women’s Volleyball Defeats William Paterson, 3-0, On The Road Saturday

WAYNE, N.J. (Sept. 9, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team swept William Paterson, 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20), on Saturday afternoon at the Pioneers' Recreation Center. In victory, the Mariners improve to 4-1, while WPU falls to 3-1 in defeat. 

Junior Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) recorded a double-double with a match-high 14 kills to go along with a team-high with 11 digs. She was one of three Mariners to register double-digit digs, as senior Alex Miller (Stevensville, Mich.) also had 11 and senior Myckenzie Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) added 10. Senior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) contributed 11 kills to the victory and sophomore setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 36 assists. 

The Mariner offensive attack was on point in the first set, as Merchant Marine recorded 15 kills to take the set, 25-15. It was much of the same for USMMA in set two, as the Mariners scored 17 of their 25 points on kills and took a 2-0 lead in the match with another 25-15 victory. 

The Pioneers showed life in the third set, taking a 20-19 lead late, however the Mariners were unfazed, as they scored six unanswered points to close out the match 25-20 in the third set. 

Two William Paterson players had a team-high five kills – sophomore Alyson Toman and junior Christine Griffith – and three players picked up double-digit digs – junior Kendall Caruso had a match-high 14, senior Julianna Ginefra added 11 and freshman Dakota Apicella ended the night with 10. Caruso also led the Pioneers with 14 assists in the match. 

Merchant Marine returns to action next weekend, when they travel up to Castine, Maine, for the annual Maritime Classic. The Mariners will face Massachusetts Maritime and SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 6 and 8 p.m., respectively, and will close out the tournament against hosts Maine Maritime, on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Live video for all three matches will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page
