KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2017) – Earlier this week, the Skyline Conference released the preseason coaches poll for the upcoming 2017 season and the USMMA women's volleyball team was picked by the conference head coaches as the favorite to win the league. This comes after the Mariners finished the 2016 season as co-Regular Season Champions and reached the finals of the Skyline Tournament.
Merchant Marine received 96 points in the poll and was picked by six coaches to finish first. Reigning 2016 Skyline Champion Farmingdale State came in second with 92 points and four first-place votes. St. Joseph's of Long Island rounded out the top three with 82 points and the remaining one first-place vote.
Mount St. Vincent was fourth with 69 points followed by Mount St. Mary in fifth with 67 points, with SUNY Maritime taking the sixth spot with 56 points. The top six teams at the end of the regular season qualify for the Skyline Tournament.
Coming in at seventh place was Sarah Lawrence (45 points), with St. Joseph's of Brooklyn eighth (41), Old Westbury ninth (27), Purchase 10th (20) and Yeshiva 11th (10).

The Mariners open the 2017 season tonight with a road match in New Jersey against Rutgers-Newark beginning at 7 p.m.
