Gleason And Pope Tapped As Volleyball Team Captains

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (August 9, 2017) – U.S. Merchant Marine Academy second-year head volleyball coach Tim Gaiser announced to the team on Tuesday night that seniors Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) have been selected as the team captains for the upcoming 2017 season.

Gleason and Pope have been three-year starters of the Mariner volleyball team and both were All-Skyline selections after the 2016 season, with Pope landing on the First Team and Gleason earning Second Team accolades.

"I couldn't be happier to have Kayla and Dom serving as the team captains this year," commented Gaiser. "With their leadership on and off the court, we are looking for great things for the team this year."

Gleason started her career as a setter her first two seasons before switching to the right side during last year's campaign. In 77 career matches, she has compiled 368 kills (1.44 per set) to go along with a .183 hitting percentage, while also recording 1,155 assists (4.53 per set), 543 digs (2.13 per set), 144 service aces and 97 total blocks. In 2016, Gleason ranked second on the squad and ninth in the Skyline Conference with 2.50 kills per set.

"Kayla has been the textbook example of leadership by example with her switch from setter to right side last year. She put the team goals ahead of her individual needs and wants. She put 100% effort into the switch and got the results and recognition she deserved from the conference. Now in her senior year, I have seen her maturity level rise, as well as her personal growth, and I'm looking forward to her being a team leader."

Pope has played in 78 matches, starting as a libero her freshman year before moving to the outside over the past two seasons. She has amassed 527 kills (2.16 per set), a .149 hitting percentage, 616 digs (2.52 per set), 82 service aces, 50 assists and 30 total blocks. In 2016, Pope led the Mariners and ranked third in the Skyline Conference with 3.08 kills per set. She was also second on the squad with 2.91 digs per set and recorded eight double-doubles on the year.

"Dominique has been the go-to player on the court the past two years and we're expecting her to do the same this year as a senior. She absolutely possesses the off-the-court leadership characteristics and traits that all coaches look for in their captains."

Gleason and Pope will look to help the program improve on its great 2016 campaign, which saw the Mariners come within a match of advancing to the NCAA Tournament – finishing as the runner-up in the Skyline Tournament. The first match of the 2017 season is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 1, at Rutgers-Newark, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
