KINGS POINT, N.Y. (July 21, 2017) – On Friday, USMMA head volleyball coach Tim Gaiser announced the schedule for the upcoming 2017 campaign, his second season at the helm of the program. The slate features 22 regular season contests, including 10 against opponents from the Skyline Conference and four against opponents that qualified for the 2016 NCAA National Tournament – Hunter, Farmingdale State, Maine Maritime and New Rochelle.
The Mariners are looking to build upon the success they achieved last season – the program's fourth-straight winning campaign – which included a Skyline Conference Regular Season Co-Championship and a trip to the Skyline Championship Match.
Merchant Marine opens the 2017 slate on the road on Friday night, Sept. 1, at Rutgers-Newark. The next week, the Mariners host matches on back-to-back nights on Monday, Sept. 4, against Pratt and on Tuesday, Sept. 5, against Skyline opponent Yeshiva. Two road matches close out the first 10 days of the season at Manhattanville on Wednesday, Sept. 6 and at William Paterson on Saturday, Sept. 9.
The next weekend, Merchant Marine will look to claim the title at the Eighth Annual Maritime Classic up in Castine, Maine, as 2016 winner Maine Maritime will host this year's tournament. The Mariners will square off against Mass. Maritime and SUNY Maritime on Saturday, Sept. 16, before closing out the weekend against the host Mariners of Maine Maritime.
The 2017 Superintendents' Trophy matchup against arch-rival Coast Guard is next on the schedule, as the Mariners will host the Bears on Thursday night, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. After a weekend off, the squad will stay in Kings Point for consecutive Skyline matches on Tuesday, Sept. 26, against St. Joseph's of Long Island and on Thursday, Sept. 28, against Mount St. Vincent. A non-conference tri-match hosted by Bard College closes out September on Saturday, Sept. 30, where USMMA will square off against City College of New York and Bard.
Just four days later, the Mariners will make another trip to Upstate New York, this time to face Skyline opponent Mount St. Mary on Wednesday, Oct. 4. A mid-week home matchup against Hunter College a week later on Wednesday, Oct. 11, precedes a Skyline tri-match on Sunday, Oct. 15, in Brooklyn against St. Joseph's of Brooklyn and Sarah Lawrence.
The Mariners close out the non-conference slate up at the College of New Rochelle on Thursday, Oct. 19, before their final two weekend Skyline tri-matches of the season. On Saturday, Oct. 21, they will travel out to Farmingdale, N.Y., to take on the host Rams of Farmingdale State and SUNY Maritime College. The final matches of the regular season will be on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the Mariners host Purchase and Old Westbury. The program will honor its seven graduating seniors with a special Senior Day ceremony before the 11 a.m. match against the Panthers.
The Skyline Tournament, which features the top six seeds of the 11-team conference, begins with quarterfinal matches on Tuesday, Oct. 31, followed by the semifinals two days later on Thursday, Nov. 2. The 2017 Skyline Champion will be crowned on Saturday, Nov. 4. The NCAA National Championship Tournament will follow later in November.
