Pope Selected To All-Skyline First Team; Gleason And Kappas Land On Second Team

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 7, 2016) – The Skyline Conference announced the postseason award winners on Monday and three Mariners were selected to the All-Conference Teams. Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) was picked to the First Team, while classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) and freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) were named to the Second Team.
 
Pope led the Mariners and ranks third in the conference with 3.08 kills per set. She's also second on the squad with 2.91 digs per set. Pope has recorded eight double-doubles on the season, including four during the Skyline regular season and one in the Skyline semifinals against Sage last week. In the win over the Gators, she tallied a career- and USMMA season-high 19 kills to lead all players in the match. Pope was named the Skyline Player of the Week twice through the year (Sept. 12 & Oct. 31) and was on the weekly honor roll once (Oct. 10).
 
Gleason was second on the squad and ninth in the Skyline with 2.50 kills per set. She recorded three double-double for the Mariners this season with two coming against Skyline opponents during the regular season. Gleason was twice honored by the Skyline Conference in back-to-back weeks, as she landed on the weekly honor roll on Oct. 17 and was selected as the Player of the Week on Oct. 24. The ECAC also chose Gleason as its DIII Metro Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26.
 
Kappas is the Skyline leader with 9.27 assists per set and ranks seventh in the league with 0.63 service aces per set. She is also third on the team with 2.87 digs per set. Four times this year, Kappas was named the Skyline Rookie of the Week (Sept. 16 & Oct. 3, Oct. 24 & Oct. 31), while the ECAC also honored her as the DIII Metro Rookie of the Week three times (Sept. 28, Oct. 5 & Oct. 26). She also earned a Skyline weekly honor roll nod on Oct. 17. Kappas led Merchant Marine with nine double-doubles this season, including three against Skyline opponents during the regular season and two in each of the Mariners' matches in the conference tournament last week.

The Mariners finished the 2016 season with a 19-9 overall record under first-year head coach Tim Gaiser. USMMA went 10-1 in Skyline Conference action and earned a share of the league's regular season title as well as the #2 seed in the conference tournament. The season came to an end in the Skyline Finals this past Saturday with a loss to Farmingdale State.
