Mariners Fall To Farmingdale State In Straight Sets In Skyline Championship Finals

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 5, 2016) – The #2-seed U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team lost the 2016 Skyline Conference Championship match to visiting #1-seed Farmingdale State in straight sets – 25-16, 25-21, 25-17 – on Saturday at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
 
Sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the way offensively for USMMA, as she put down eight kills. Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs, while senior libero Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) led all players with 19 digs and junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up 11 digs.
 
For the Rams, freshman Julia Hande nearly recorded a triple-double, as she had a match-high 17 kills (on .389 hitting) to go along with 11 assists and nine digs. Sophomore Lauren Anne Strezenec also registered a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Stephanie Etersque led her squad with 17 digs. Hande was named the Skyline Tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
 
The Mariners end the season with a 19-9 overall record under first-year head coach Tim Gaiser, while Farmingdale State improves to 19-7 and advances to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history.
