Volleyball Secures Second Seed And Earns Share Of Skyline Regular Season Title With Two Wins Sunday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team earned a pair of Skyline victories at a tri-match that the Mariners hosted on Sunday at the Liebertz Gymnasium on Senior Day. With the two wins, Merchant Marine earns a share of the Skyline Conference Regular Season Title with a 10-1 record, while the Mariners also secure the #2 seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championships this week.
 
USMMA defeated Yeshiva in straight sets (25-4, 25-6, 25-7) in the morning, before downing Mount St. Mary in four (25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 29-27) in the afternoon.
 
Prior to the first match of the day against the Yeshiva Maccabees, the Mariners honored their three graduating seniors and two senior student-assistant coaches with a special Senior Day Ceremony – Bridget Quinn (Lake Ariel, Pa.), Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.), Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.), Don Wiegner and Sean Johnson.
 
In the straight-set win over the Macs, sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led Merchant Marine offensively with 12 kills to go along with four service aces and five digs. Freshman Alaina Hudson (King George, Va.) registered 17 assists in two sets off the bench, while Marionakis led the squad and tied the match-high with seven digs. Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) added 13 assists and Macbeth contributed two blocks in the victory.
 
In the second match against the Knights of Mount. St. Mary, two Mariners recorded double-digit kills, as junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) had a team-high 15 kills and Ibinson put down 13. Kappas led all players as she dished out a career-high 45 assists over the four sets. Sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) added nine kills in the win.
 
Defensively, four Mariners had double-digit digs – Marionakis led the way with 24 digs, Pope had a double-double with 19 digs, Ibinson also registered a double-double with 11 digs and sophomore Megan Toler (Prunedale, Calif.) also had 11 digs to go along with eight kills.
 
As the #2 seed, the Mariners have earned a first-round bye in the 2016 Skyline Conference Championships. They will host the winner of the #3 St. Joseph's (L.I.) vs. #6 Mount St. Vincent match (which takes place this Tuesday) in the Skyline Semifinals this Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. They Skyline Semifinal match will feature live stats and a live video feed – with the USMMA Sports Network's John Kelly Jr. on the call with the play-by-play for Merchant Marine – with links available on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
