Gleason And Kappas Sweep Skyline Women’s Volleyball Weekly Awards

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2016) – The Skyline Conference announced on Monday that USMMA junior right-side hitter Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) was named the league's Women's Volleyball Player of the Week, while freshman setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) earned Rookie of the Week honors. This is the second straight week that the Mariner duo was honored by the Skyline, as they were both named to the honor roll last week.

Gleason lifted the Mariners to a 5-0 week (4-0 Skyline), as Merchant Marine dropped just one set along the way. She averaged 3.73 kills per set on .245 hitting, while passing 2.2 digs per frame. She picked up a career and USMMA season-best 17 kills against both Mount Saint Vincent and Sage. In the latter contest, a four-set victory over the Gators, she completed a double-double with 16 digs. Gleason ranks seventh in the Skyline with 2.55 kills per set, and 10th with a .195 hitting percentage.

This is Kappas' third Skyline Rookie of the Week selection of the season (Sept. 19 & Oct. 3). In just 16 sets played last week, she averaged 10.81 assists, 2.88 digs and 0.81 service aces. She dished out 30-plus assists in all four Skyline victories, including a 42-assist, 21-dig (season-best) effort in four sets over Sage. Kappas leads the conference with an average of 9.32 assists per set, a mark that is also 63rd among all Division III setters. Her 0.57 service aces per set rank her 79th in the country.

Also ranking among the Skyline stat leaders are junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.), sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). Pope is third in the league with 3.05 kills per set, Lefler ranks ninth with a .206 hitting percentage and Marionakis is ninth with 3.33 digs per set.

As a team, the Mariners lead the Skyline and rank third in the nation in holding opponents to a .046 hitting percentage. They're also 19th in the country with 2.75 aces per set. In the Skyline, the squad leads the league with 10.87 kills per set and 10.25 assists per set, while also ranking second in hitting percentage (.152)

The Mariners, who are tied with Farmingdale State atop the Skyline standings, close out the regular season next Sunday, Oct. 30, when they host Yeshiva and Mount St. Mary in a Skyline tri-match. One more win for USMMA will earn the squad a first-round bye in the upcoming Skyline Tournament. All three matches this Sunday will feature live stats and a live video feed – with the USMMA Sports Network's John Kelly Jr. on the call with the play-by-play for Merchant Marine's two matches – with links available on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
