Volleyball Clinches Skyline Tourney Berth With A Pair Of Home Wins Sunday

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team earned a pair of Skyline Conference victories at home on Sunday over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn and Sage. With the wins, the Mariners' record improves to 16-8 (8-1 Skyline) and they have clinched a berth in the Skyline Tourney, which begins in early November.
 
USMMA swept the Bears of St. Joseph's-Brooklyn by the scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-11. Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with 16 kills on .375 hitting and was just one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 39 assists and recorded eight digs and three service aces. Senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up a match-high 17 digs.
 
Junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) chipped in with nine kills and seven digs, while senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) both had six kills and .500 hitting percentages. Macbeth also added nine digs and three aces.
 
In the second match, the Mariners lost the first set to Sage – who came into the day ranked second in the Skyline Conference – by the score of 25-23, but rebounded by winning the next three sets, 25-21, 29-27 and 25-18.
 
For the second straight day, Gleason registered a season-high 17 kills, which is a Mariner-best this year. She had a double-double with 16 digs. Kappas and Pope also recorded double-doubles as Kappas had 42 assists to go along with a career-best 21 digs and Pope added 14 kills and 22 tied for the match0high with 22 digs.
 
Sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) hit at a 34.6-percent clip in the four-set win, as she had 10 kills with just one error on 26 attempts. Maroinakis and Ibinson contributed defensively with 18 and 15 digs, respectively, and Ibinson also put down seven kills.
 
The Mariners, who are now tied with Farmingdale atop the Skyline standings, will take the next six days off from competition and close out the regular season next Sunday, Oct. 30, when they host Yeshiva and Mount St. Mary in a Skyline tri-match.
