Mariners Suffer Two Non-Conference Losses At Kean Tri-Match

UNION, N.J. (Oct. 15, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost a pair of non-conference matches at a tri-match hosted by Kean University on Saturday. The Mariners lost a five-set thriller to Notre Dame (Md.), 3-2, before falling to the host Cougars in straight sets. The losses drop Merchant Marine's record to 11-8 on the season.
 
In the loss to the Gators of Notre Dame, the Mariners won the first set, 25-22, but lost the next two, 25-23 and 25-16. USMMA forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-9 fourth-set victory, however the Gators triumphed in the fifth, 15-8.
 
Juniors Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) and Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) both had 10 kills apiece, while freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) had a double-double with 37 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the Mariners with 16 digs and sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) both had 11 digs each. Gleason and junior Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) both registered four blocks apiece.
 
Notre Dame was led by senior Cassidy Keller, who had a match-high 14 kills. Four Gators recorded double-digit digs with senior Cleaya Antes leading all players with 20 digs. Junior Jamie Reyes matched Kappas' assist total with 37 helpers. Reyes and junior Bobbi McDowell both had five blocks each to lead all players.
 
In the 25-19, 25-12, 25-9 straight set loss to Kean, Pope picked up a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs, while Gleason led the squad with 12 kills. Kappas dished out 38 assists and Ibinson contributed defensively with 10 digs. Senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) had a team-high two blocks.
 
The Cougars' junior Sara Ridgway recorded a match-high 13 kills, freshman Brianna Calvano had 29 assists and senior Alexis Whitney picked up 10 digs. Freshman Jesse Larkin led all players with four blocks.
 
Up next, the Mariners will travel to Staten Island for a non-conference match against the College of Staten Island on Tuesday night, Oct. 18. The match against the Dolphins is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at CSI's Sports & Recreation Center.
