Kappas Named Skyline Rookie Of The Week; Ibinson Lands On Honor Roll

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 4, 2016) – The Skyline Conference announced its weekly award winners for volleyball on Monday and USMMA freshman setter Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) was selected as the Rookie of the Week, while sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) earned a spot on the weekly honor roll. The honors come after the duo's performances in the Mariners' 3-1 week during the week ending Sunday, Oct. 2.

This is the second time this season that Kappas was named the Skyline ROW (Sept. 19), while she also has ECAC Rookie of the Week honors as well (Sept. 28). The rookie recorded 10.25 assists per set over four matches last week for the Mariners. She had 29 helpers in a 3-0 win over New Rochelle on Tuesday and followed that up with 40 in a sweep over Bard on Thursday. This past Saturday, she dished out 35 assists in a victory over Lehman and finished the week with 19 in a straight-set loss at Montclair State.

Ibinson had a team-high 33 kills over the four matches last week, while hitting at a .261 clip. She also picked up 28 digs in the 12 sets. The sophomore registered a double-double in a straight-set home win over Bard on Thursday with 10 kills and 10 digs and followed that up with a game-high 11 kills against Lehman on Saturday.

Kappas remains the Skyline leader with 8.80 assists per set, a full 1.71 average per set better than second place Rachel Liebig of Sage.

Also among Skyline leaders are Ibinson, junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.), sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.). Pope is third in the conference with 2.76 kills per set, while Ibinson ranks 10th in the same category with 2.14. Lefler's .217 hitting percentage is good for fifth in the Skyline and Marionakis ranks seventh with 3.49 digs per set.

As a team, the Mariners are tops in the Skyline in keeping opponents to a .059 hitting percentage and through Oct. 2, their .069 opponent hitting percentage ranked fourth in the country. Merchant Marine is also the conference leader in assists per set (9.63), kills per set (10.43) and opponent's kills per set (7.57). USMMA ranks third in hitting percentage (.149), third in opponent's assists per set (7.02) and third in blocks per set (1.04).
