Mariners Sweep Brooklyn College In Non-Conference Action

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2016) – On Monday night, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team notched its ninth win of the season over Brooklyn College in straight sets – 25-16, 25-9, 25-10 – to improve to 9-5 overall. The visiting Bulldogs fall to 3-16 in defeat.
 
Junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) registered a match-high 11 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, while freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) had a double-double with 37 assists and 10 digs.
 
The 10 digs tied Kappas for the team-high with senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.). Sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) recorded nine kills on the night and Pope contributed eight kills. Junior Rebecca Snyder (Jacksonville, Fla.) added seven kills and led all players with two blocks.
 
Brooklyn was led by senior Christolia Butler, who had four kills, while sophomore setter Monineath Pen dished out eight assists and junior Sarina Rozek picked up a match-high 12 digs.
 
The Mariners return to the court this coming Saturday, Oct. 8, when they host a Skyline Conference tri-match at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The first match of the day against the Rams of Farmingdale State College is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start. After Farmingdale takes on St. Joseph's of Long Island in the second match, Merchant Marine will square off against the Golden Eagles in the final match (scheduled for 3 p.m., but possibly starting earlier.)
