Volleyball Wins Third Straight With 3-0 Triumph Over New Rochelle

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Sept. 27, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team defeated visiting College of New Rochelle on Tuesday night in straight sets – 25-17, 25-15, 25-16 – for the squad's third straight victory. The win improves the Mariners' record to 6-4 on the season, while the Blue Angels fall to 4-8.
 
Junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led all players with nine kills to go along with six digs, while sophomore Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) registered eight kills and a team-high seven digs. Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 29 assists and picked up six digs. Senior Jordy Macbeth (Orlando, Fla.) hit at an impressive 75-percent clip as she had seven kills with no errors on eight attempts. Macbeth also had two blocks, as did Ibinson and sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.).
 
Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) contributed six kills and senior libero Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) had five digs.
 
CNR was led offensively by freshman Cristal Liciaga, who had seven kills and eight digs. Classmate libero Brianna Garcia picked up a match-high 10 digs over the three sets and senior Melanie Lopez Soto recorded 14 assists.
 
The Mariners are back in action this Thursday, Sept. 29, when they face Bard at 7 p.m. at the Liebertz Gymnasium. Live stats and a live video feed of the match will be available with links on the USMMA Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
