NEW YORK (Sept. 20, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team lost a non-conference contest on the road on Tuesday to Hunter College, 3-2, at the Hawks' Hunter Sportsplex. The loss drops the Mariners' record to 3-4 overall on the season, while the Hawks improve to 7-7.
Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded a double-double with a team-high 13 kills and 16 digs. Classmate Kayla Gleason (Sound Shore, N.Y.) added 12 kills and just missed a double-double with nine digs, senior Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up 16 digs and freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) dished out 34 assists over the five sets.
The Mariners dropped the first set by the score of 25-14, but rebounded to win the second set 25-16. Hunter took the third set, 25-19, to pull within a set of winning, however Merchant Marine would not go down quietly, as they forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-22 win in a very close fourth set. The hosts went on to take the clincher, 15-10, however, to win the match.
Two players registered double-double for the Hawks – junior Julia Connolly led all players in the game with 25 kills to go along with 12 digs and sophomore Taylor Kerr-Haiduk contributed 16 kills with 11 digs. Senior Breanna Banske had a match-high 51 assists, while Samantha Barrett added 10 kills and four blocks.
