Mariners Split Action On Second Day Of Maritime Classic

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (Sept. 18, 2016) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy women's volleyball team played two matches earlier in the day on Sunday up at Mass. Maritime on the second and final day of the Seventh Annual Maritime Classic. The Mariners swept the host Buccaneers to start the day, but lost their second match, the de facto Classic Championship match against Maine Maritime, in straight set. The split moves USMMA's record to an even 3-3 on the season.
 
Sophomore Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) were both named to the All-Maritime Classic Team.
 
In the 25-8, 25-14, 25-15 victory over Mass. Maritime, the Mariners were hitting on all cylinders, as the squad hit at a 34.7-percent clip (45K-12E-93A). Junior Dominique Pope (Silver Spring, Md.) led all players in the match with 12 kills with an impressive .429 hitting percentage. Lefler and classmate Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) added seven and six kills, respectively. Junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) had five kills on seven attempts with no errors for a .714 hitting percentage.
 
Kappas dished out 38 assists while also picking up six digs. A pair of seniors led the Mariner defense, as Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and Amanda See (Waukesha, Wis.) both registered eight digs apiece. For Mass. Maritime, senior Charleen Klangos
 
In the 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 loss to Maine Maritime, Pope recorded a team-high seven kills, Kappas had 17 assists and Marionakis picked up 11 digs. Classic MVP, senior Gillian O'Neal, registered a double-double for Maine Maritime with a match-high 14 kills to go along with 11 digs.
 
Up next, Merchant Marine travels to Manhattan on Tuesday night, Sept. 20, to take on non-conference opponent Hunter College. First serve against the Hawks will be at 6 p.m. at the Hunter Sportsplex.
