Volleyball Sweeps SUNY Maritime On Opening Night Of Maritime Classic

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. (Sept. 18, 2016) – The USMMA women's volleyball team defeated SUNY Maritime in straight sets on Saturday night in a neutral site match on the opening night of the Maritime Classic, hosted by Mass. Maritime, for its first Skyline Conference victory of the season. The Mariners move to an even 2-2 (1-0 Skyline) on the season, while the Privateers fall to 4-4 (0-1 Skyline) in defeat.
 
Sophomores Kate Lefler (Norman, Okla.) and Nicole Ibinson (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the Merchant Marine offense with eight and seven kills, respectively. Ibinison had a team-best .278 hitting percentage (7K-2E-18A), while Lefler hit at a 23.5-percent clip (8K-4E-17A). Freshman Kyleigh Kappas (Parker, Colo.) had a match-high 20 assists on the night, while junior Kayla Gleason (Sound Beach, N.Y.) led all players in the match with 14 digs. Senior libero Gabby Marionakis (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) contributed to the Mariner defense with 11 digs.
 
USMMA won the first set, 25-19, before a second set that saw the Mariners cling to a lead late before coming out on top, 25-22. Merchant Marine never looked back in the match, as they took the third set by the score of 25-18.
 
The Privateers were led by freshman Sheila Flaherty, who had a team-high seven kills. Senior Erika Bailey dished out 15 assists and classmate Carly Lombardo led the squad with 12 digs.
 
The Mariners return to action tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 18, when they take on both Mass. Maritime and Maine Maritime on the second day of the Maritime Classic. Live stats and live video feeds of both matches will be available with links on the USMMA Volleyball Schedule Page.
